THE National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has expressed grave concern over the government’s failure to recruit 2,000 new teachers, with just a month left in 2025. Despite the budget allocation being approved by Parliament, the process hasn’t begun, says NAQEZ Executive Director, Dr. Aaron Chansa.
“This is not just a delay it’s a betrayal of public trust. The Teaching Service Commission must update the nation immediately. Without transparency, wrong conclusions are inevitable,” Dr Chansa said.
The 2, 000 teachers, though a small step, are critical to improving the country’s strained pupil-teacher ratios, with the sector needing over 70, 000 more teachers to meet standards.
NAQEZ warns that inertia risks Zambia’s progress on UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education).
Dr. Chansa urged inclusivity and accountability in the process, stressing, “When education waits, national development stalls. We can’t mortgage our future.”
