Zambia’s movement from the sixth most peaceful country to ninth position in Sub-Saharan Africa is an indication of the deterioration of levels of peace that the country is experiencing,
Patriotice Front Deputy Chairperson for Publicity, Emmanuel Mwamba says.
Mr Mwamba said in 2023, Zambia has experienced a deterioration of peace as the country has moved in its ranking as the sixth (6) most peaceful country in 2022 to the ninth most peaceful country in 2023.
Zambia’s ranking has been affected by a deterioration in the indicators of ‘incarceration rates’ and perceptions of criminality.

“The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has bemoaned Zambia’s deterioration on her levels of peacefulness as contained in the 17th Edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), the universe leading measure of peacefulness around the globe conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP),” Mr Mwamba said.
He said this was a slight deterioration from the 2022 GPI when Zambia was ranked as the 56th most peaceful country in the world.
Mr Mwamba said Zambia was ranked ninth in 2023 behind Mauritius, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Senegal, Madagascar, Namibia, and the Gambia.
He said the GPI ranked 163 sovereign states and territories as per their levels of peacefulness and this number of states and territories covered 99.7 percent of the global population measuring peace across three domains namely: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) has dispelled allegations by certain individuals that it did not condemn acts of torture.
The HRC said the Commission wished to reiterate its call to enact a law that criminalised torture in Zambia, which would also provide adequate penalties against perpetrators and compensation to victims of torture, its spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya said
