A SMEAR campaign by some frustrated individuals aimed at tarnishing President Edgar Lungu’s image will not succeed in eroding the people’s confidence in the Head of State, says the Zambian DNA leader Spuki Mulemwa.
Mr Mulemwa said a group of disgruntled politicians, lawyers and self-proclaimed human rights activists had engaged a media known to be hostile to Government to create acrimony against the President.
“Some of the means employed include peddling falsehoods against the Head of State in an effort to influence public opinion, and erode people’s confidence in President Lungu,
“These frustrated and bitter groups of people are determined to employ any means to force President Lungu’s exit from power,” he said.
He charged that for all the allegations made against the President, there was no evidence presented or even submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to prove them.
He said the President himself challenged all those making corruption allegations in the procurement of the 42 fire engines to present their evidence to the ACC, which they have failed to do so to date.
Mr Mulemwa said in a signed communique with other organisations among them Movement for Economic Empowerment and Development (MEED), Battle Cry, Bethel Baptist Church and Media Election Monitoring Project (MEMP) appealed to Zambians to dispel corruption allegations against President Lungu and instead chose to support the Government of the day.
“The consortium of organisations is of the view that the smear campaign against President Lungu is a deliberate attempt to mislead the nation, and efforts to force Lungu’s exit from power.
“We are appealing to President Lungu to remain steadfast in the discharge of his duties as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the defence forces,” they said.
