GOVERNMENT says GreenCo continues to play an influential role in energy trading, system balancing and renewable energy deployment in Southern Africa, contributions that have reinforced the country’s strategic position in the continent’s clean energy transition.
Speaking at the official opening of GreenCo’s Lusaka head office and trading centre, Energy Minister Makozo Chikote said the company’s progress demonstrated how strong policy direction, combined with private-sector innovation, can accelerate national development and enhance regional energy cooperation.
Mr Chikote said GreenCo’s work in coordinating power trading and facilitating the integration of renewable energy across interconnected regional markets has strengthened the country’s profile as an emerging energy hub.
He noted that the launch of the fully solar-powered office complex – equipped with advanced storage systems and a fleet of electric vehicles – reflects the new dawn administration’s drive to advance clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions in public and private infrastructure.
“This new office is more than a physical structure; it stands as a strong statement of confidence in Zambia. It shows that our national ambitions in clean energy are achievable through focus, innovation and meaningful collaboration,” he said.
Mr Chikote also highlighted GreenCo’s support for ongoing electricity sector reforms aimed at improving open access, attracting private investment and broadening the country’s energy mix. He said the company has contributed to generation initiatives, emergency power importation during shortages and job creation for Zambians.
GreenCo Group Chief Executive Officer Ana Hajduka described the new headquarters as a major milestone for both the company and the country where it was founded, licensed and established before expanding operations to South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Ms Hajduka said GreenCo’s regional footprint illustrates that Zambia is not just participating in the energy transition but helping to shape it.
“Our building is a practical reflection of the future we believe in – fully solar-powered, supported by advanced storage and complemented by our first fleet of electric corporate vehicles,” she said.
She thanked the government, the Energy Regulation Board and Zesco for fostering an enabling environment and for their collaboration on projects such as the 100 MW Chisamba Solar Project, a Zesco-owned facility supported by GreenCo through innovative offtake and trading arrangements.
GreenCo Managing Director Wezi Gondwe said the company’s mandate is to complement the public sector by de-risking renewable energy investments, supporting utilities and ensuring reliable power for commercial and industrial customers.
