Mr. Nensema has called on government to restore confidence in farmers by ensuring that farming inputs are delivered on time.
Mr. Nsensema noted that farmers have been subjected to mediocre management of the farmer inputs distribution system under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). He said farmers are expecting to have their inputs delivered on time and in correct quantities.
He stated that farmers do not only expect cost reflective prices for major commodities such as maize and soya beans, but also expect reliable up-takers, especially the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
He noted that unpredictable behaviour by government through FRA has continued. He observed that initially the FRA had declined to buy soya beans from farmers, which caused the commodity price to drop below production cost. He said such antics have continued to demoralize farmers.
Mr. Nsensema has therefore urged government to see to it that it puts in measures that will enable a well elaborated agricultural sector that inspires farmers and ensures food security in the country.
