EMMANUEL Mwamba was yesterday released on police bond after a two-day goose chase between the Zambia Police and his lawyers after being arrested and charged with forgery and publication of false information.
And Mr Mwamba has described his charges as nothing but ridiculous and false only meant to oppress and silence him.
Mr Mwamba had to be rushed the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) soon after his release so that he could be checked by a doctor after he was allegedly assaulted by the police.
Mr Mwamba said there was no iota of truth to any of the charged there police had proffered on him.
“They (police) have charged us with five counts but for me, the charges are ridiculous and false. The charges are being used to oppress me because there is no truth to any of the charges they have given me. I am currently at UTH to see a doctor after what I have been through the last 72 hours,” Mr Mwamba said. Mr Mwamba who had in the last 48 hours been detained at the Emasadale Police Station was yesterday around 12 hours whisked to Police Force Headquarters before being taken to Woodlands Police where he was eventually granted bond.
Mr Mwamba, the Patriotic Front (PF) deputy information and publicity chairperson was on Tuesday trailed, ambushed and savagely picked up after being blindfolded and was driven to three different police station in one night.
His lawyer, Makebi Zulu, one of the renowned Zambian lawyers on Thursday said Mr Mwamba was allegedly assaulted by the police but in a turn of events, the former Ambassador to Ethiopia was instead charged with the offence of assaulting a police officer.
And yesterday, Mr Mwamba was moved from Emasdale Police Station to Force Headquarters before he was taken to Woodlands police and by press time, the PF presidential candidate had had his bond secured.
George Chisanga, the PF chairperson for legal affairs confirmed the release of Mr Mwamba whom he described to be fine despite having a swollen arm believed to have been sustained through police assault.
“He has been released on bond and he is going home. He is well but has a swollen arm which he says he sustained after he was allegedly beaten by the police. He is also complaining of general body pains but the police have denied him medical report but we shall be pursuing that on Monday,” Mr Chisanga said.
