IT is risky for the country’s fuel reserve to stand at a sustenance level of five to 10 days, an energy expert, Boniface Zulu has warned Government.
Energy Minister Peter Kapala last week in Parliament said as of February 28, 2022, the country’s fuel reserve stood at five to 10 days against the recommended international standard which is 60 to 90 days of fuel reserve.
And Engineer Zulu said with the current reserve, the country is not in a position to shield itself against high prices of fuel on the international market.
He said in case of any other external factors that may push further the price of oil the commodity is likely to increase going forward.
Eng. Zulu said currently, the price of fuel is already high and affecting small and medium businesses that depend on the commodity for operations.
He has however commended the government for its efforts in establishing provincial fuel reserve depots such as the Mansa fuel depots which has a capacity of 6.5 million litres.
