THE Zambia Police has revoked its callout to Dr Fred M’membe, the leader of the Socialist Party (SP) whom it had summoned for interrogations on unspecified and unknown transgressions.
Dr M’membe was on Monday summoned by the Zambia Police and was scheduled to appear before police at Force Head Quarters today but was yesterday informed by his lawyers that the callout had been withdrawn.
“You are required to report yourself to Zambia Police Service Headquarters on Wednesday, 26/03/25 at 10:00 hours for the purpose of investigations. You won’t be kept longer than is absolutely necessary,” read the call out to Dr M’membe. But yesterday, Dr M’membe said he had been informed that his summoning had been rescheduled to a date to be communicated and should therefore not proceed to the Force Headquarters today.
“We have been informed that the Zambia Police Service has rescheduled the interrogation, which was planned to take place tomorrow at Police headquarters. As you may be aware, the police had summoned me to appear for questioning at Police Headquarters on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.But late this afternoon, our lawyers notified us that the police had contacted them and guided that the interrogation had been rescheduled to a date to be advised, and that I will not be required to avail myself to the police tomorrow (today), Dr M’membe said.
“With these changes, we would like to urge all our party members and structures from various districts and provinces countrywide, who had mobilised, and are now on the way to Lusaka to immediately turn back. For the teams in Lusaka and surrounding districts, we encourage you to remain on high alert just in case fresh developments arise,” he said.
And Dr M’membe has advised President Hakainde Hichilema to learn something from the Bemba wisdom, which states: ‘Mweo wa muntu, waba mu kutwi,’ (the life of a person is in the ear.)
“One who is willing to listen avoids a lot of trouble and perhaps an untimely death. Cula cintomfwa, apulikila mulemba mu kutwi – the frog who did not listen burst his ear drum. The unheeding person comes to grief. Icikutilwe tacumfwa ndibu – an idiot does not hear the warning bell. A senseless person does not heed good advice,” Dr M’membe said.
