CHIEFTAINESS Shimukunami of the Lamba people of Lufwanyama has expressed worry about the rampant early marriages in her area.
The Chieftainess observed that parents in her chiefdom were giving excuses that they were marrying off young girls due to poverty.
Chieftainess Shimukunami was however confident that some programmes being rolled out in the area by Government would reduce poverty as well as early marriages.
The traditional leader said she would partner with relevant authorities to find a lasting solution to the problem.
“This matter has really been a problem and I have noticed that it is becoming rampant in this area and I am getting worried.
“Most parents have been giving excuses that they have been marrying off young girls due to high poverty levels in the area,” she said.
Chieftainess Shimukunami further thanked the government for looking into the plight of the people of Lufwanyama.
She said having the thought of being remembered by the Head of State was a good feeling and encouraging.
She said with empowerment programmes being rolled out in the area, people would change their behaviour of marrying off their children at a tender age for money because they would have other sources of income.
