THERE is need for the Junior Chipolopolo to improve on their standard of play if they are to do well at the 2017 South Korea World Cup which kicks off on March 22, Zambia Football Fans Association (ZAFFA) president Derrick Lukwesa has said.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation Sports in Lusaka, Lukwesa said the team’s performance was a bit shaky especially in midfield.
Despite having won the Under-20 AfCON with a 100 percent record, Lukwesa said there was still more that the Junior Chipolopolo needed to do to improve ahead of the South Korea World Cup.
“Our midfield looked shaky and at the World Cup we are going to meet fast-paced players, therefore we need to ensure that the boys don’t lose concentration. We need to ensure that we strengthen our midfield because the mistakes the boys made in the midfield during the AfCON made our defence to look shaky,” said Lukwesa.
And Lusaka-based soccer analyst and football writer Musonda Chibulu commended the Under-20 boys for winning the AfCON trophy. Chibulu however said there was more that the Beston Chambeshi technical bench can do to prepare the boys ahead of the World Cup.
“Firstly, let me congratulate the boys for their great performance at the AfCON tournament which they eventually won. Credit should also go to FAZ for the way they prepared the boys for the AfCON. Outings such as the one to Spain where the boy played the likes of Barcelona youths contributed massively to the boys winning the AfCON.
Phiri however noted that there was need for the Football Association of Zambia to prepare the boys adequately.
He called on the technical bench led by Beston Chambeshi to reinforce the team.
