THERE is need for responsible action from all Zambians toward protecting the environment and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, Chikobo ward Councillor Reagan Mubatsa has said.
And Mr Mubatsa identified the need for massive sensitisation of Zambians on the meaning, effects and prevention of climate change, pointing out that positive behaviour change was the surest way to stem the ugly side of climate change.
Meanwhile, Mr Mubatsa also implored government to make climate change a priority.
He noted that although there were policies put in place to address the challenge of climate change by government, no effort had been seen in implementing these policies.
“There is no gain saying that the government have put in policies or have programs running in Zambia to mitigate climate change effect, when there are lots of loop holes with the adopted strategy. Government need to take the lead, they need to allocate more resources specifically for climate change” Mr. Mubatsa said.
He said there was need to step up efforts towards the enhanced climate change adaptation and building resilience.
“Climate change has a great impact on Zambia, and government has to scale up their efforts towards mitigating climate change.
He urged Zambians to always keep the environment clean and avoid dumping of refuse in drainages and water ways, as such negative habits contributed significantly to environmental degradation and climate change effects.
