UN RESIDENT Coordinator Janet Rogan has said government’s programme of road rehabilitation and construction will help to open up various tourism attraction sites.
Ms Rogan said, for the Zambian tourism potential to be fully exploited, it was important to put up a tourism plan like putting up good roads, lodges and guest houses in areas where they were tourism sites.
She said in an interview at the on-going Zambia International Trade Fair that government and the private sector should work together to promote tourism, especially with the government policy of promoting diversification.
“The tourism potential in Zambia is yet to be fully exploited because most of the roads leading to tourism sites are not in good state. Because of bad state of roads, the access to these areas is limited. Kasaba bay is a very important tourist attraction, but the access is limited. So I think, with the government programme of road rehabilitation and construction, this will help to open up tourism sites,” Ms Rogan said.
She said while government was working on road rehabilitation and construction, the private sector should also promote tourism by constructing guesthouses and lodges in various tourism sites.
She said, a well-developed tourism sector would contribute to job creation and economic recovery.
She said poaching was one of the challenges which the tourism sector was facing and needed to be dealt with collectively
“In trying to curb poaching, UN was working with the Zambia Wild Life Authority ZAWA and the community in protecting wildlife. Tourism should be seriously considered in the Seventh National Development Plan,” She said.
