KABWE Municipal Council is corrupt and for the vice to stop, the people involved should be exposed, says Kabwe Central Patriotic Front Member of Parliament Tutwa Ngulube.
Mr Ngulube said corruption at the council was skyrocketing as some councillors had made a cartel by embarking on demolishing houses and selling plots to the highest bidder.
He described it as unfortunate, saying officials should not carry out illegal activities in the name of the council.
He wondered why a planner at the council who was not a surveyor would go about demolishing people’s houses, demarcating and putting up beacons and selling plots despite the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Jean Kapata having suspended the licence.
In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Ngulube said his office was not being consulted on pertinent issues of land and that he had written to the Town Clerk on the matter and warned council officials to stop their corrupt activities as he would not sit idly by and watch innocent citizens suffer.
According to an audio made available to the tabloid newspaper, Mr Francis Mawite, a planner at the council is being interrogated and advised to stop demolishing people’s houses by Mr Ngulube because he did not have a court order or any authority to carry out such activities.
Mr Mawite said he was working under clear instructions from higher authorities such as director planning as well as other directors at the council to conduct such activities.
‘‘Corruption scandals at Kabwe Municipal Council have taken an all time high. We have a problem, residents are being harassed, I have been sidelined and my office is not consulted on such serious matters which directly affect people’s lives.
