CHAVUMA District Commissioner Benjamin Mufunga has advised marketeers in the area to desist from practicing politics and tribalism in trading places.
Mr. Mufunga who addressed marketeers at Chavuma Main market yesterday said no individual marketeer should claim to be in charge of the market and victimize others based on tribal or political affiliation.
The district Commissioner warned that punitive measures would be taken against those that were in the habit of chasing fellow marketeers from trading place based on tribal or political lines, adding that the running of the market was a sole responsibility of the local authority.
“Markets are public places and every citizen is free to conduct their businesses there. So, no one should claim ownership of any market,” he said.
He was reacting to reports suggesting that some people from a named political party had been plotting to remove some traders from markets on political affiliation grounds.
The district commissioner also said hate speech and tribalism would deter development in the area and urged the marketeers to embrace unity as they conducted their daily business for ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto to be meaningful.
Mr. Mufunga further urged marketeers to engage his office on various issues affecting their wellbeing.
He said government was concerned with the welfare of marketeers and was determined to assist for them to conduct business in a conducive environment.
