BY FLAVIOR KANUNGO UNIVERSITY of Zambia (UNZA) Historian Bizeck Phiri has urged the opposition political parties to be proactive in offering checks and balances to the United Party for National Development-UPND government.Professor Phiri has noted that some opposition political parties have failed to offer checks and balances to the governing UPND.Professor Phiri says despite the country having more than 100 political parties only less than 10 political parties are participating in ensuring that the ruling party is kept in check.He says democratic dispensation will be very difficult to achieve if the some parties go into oblivion. He has since encouraged opposition political parties to consider relinquishing their parties to join other vibrant parties as opposed to being just a party on paper without an impact.
