The irate drivers fought running battles with police and amid the confusion, a police vehicle, Toyota Hilux ZP 1950 B, had its rare windscreen stoned and shattered. Copperbelt police chief Charity Katanga confirmed the development, stating that the riot was as a result of police impounding pirate taxis, mostly Toyota Noahs, that ferry passengers in and out of town. Ms.Katanga described the practice as illegal. She said traffic police had yesterday morning carried out patrols as part of their duties but their presence in town centre infuriated the drivers and vendors who attacked the police.
