By BARNABAS ZULU THE Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Zambian government of facilitating hazardous mining activities in Kabwe, a city that has suffered from severe lead contamination for decades. The report, released yesterday, claims that under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, the government has allowed illegal mining of lead and zinc, further exacerbating the risks to the health of local communities, particularly children. The former lead and zinc mine in Kabwe, which closed in 1994, left behind an estimated 6.4 million tons of toxic waste.
