PROLONGED electricity outages and shortage of water has hit Chama District forcing residents to resort to drawing water from contaminated sources.Chama North Member of Parliament Yotam Mtayachalo said the prolonged power outage was affecting economic activities and households resulting in the local people drawing unsafe water from Kamphemba stream and shallow wells. He said the electricity challenges in the district has also affected smooth hospital operations and the mortuary because the district hospital generator has not been operational. He said as a Member of Parliament, he was extremely worried about the erratic supply of water in the district and called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the problem is timely resolved. Mr Mtayachalo said the continued prolonged power interruptions in the district had the potential to result into the outbreak of diarrheal diseases such as cholera because of the district’s proximity to neighbouring Malawi where there is an outbreak of the disease.
