By JACKSON MAPAPAYIZAMBIA is losing about 270,000 hectares per year in deforestation, making it number one in Africa, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Jean Kapata has disclosed.Ms Kapata said that if the situation was not controlled, Zambia was likely to become a desert soon. She also revealed that most natural forest areas had continued being encroached despite numerous warnings.Ms Kapata was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on North-western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu in Solwezi at the weekend. In response, Mr Mubukwanu said that the province has experienced a lot of charcoal burning as well as timber dealing most of which is being done illegally.
