HEALTH Minister Elijah Muchima has confirmed that the recent cholera outbreaks recorded in some parts of the country have been y contained, preventing what could have escalated into a major public health emergency.
Dr Muchima commended President Hakainde Hichilema for his decisive leadership, stating that at this time of the year when cholera cases often surge, the situation could have been disastrous under previous administrations.
Speaking in an interview, he attributed the outbreaks mainly to poor hygiene practices and contaminated water sources.
He noted that while authorities have strengthened surveillance, it remains difficult to fully control cases imported by travellers from neighbouring countries that experience cholera outbreaks throughout the year.
Dr Muchima emphasised that Government’s rapid response systems were instrumental in curbing the spread.
Last year’s outbreak in Nakonde was swiftly contained, while this year’s cases in Mpulunguand Monze were quickly brought under control.
In Mpulungu, most infections were linked to fishing traders and travellers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
In Lusaka, isolated cases were traced to one family after a member travelled outside the city and delayed seeking medical attention.
Dr Muchima confirmed that all reported cases and fatalities have since been contained.
He urged citizens to maintain high standards of hygiene, including frequent handwashing, thorough cooking of food and drinking safe water.
