THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has said President Hakainde Hichilema deserves commendation for ensuring the price of mealie meal has dropped significantly across the country.
Western Province UPND media team member Spuki Mulemwa said the price of the staple food had reduced to less than K250 per 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal, a move that has brought relief to many households.
“President Hichilema should indeed be commended for the significant reduction of the price of our staple food. Today, a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal is now fetching less than K250 across the board,” Mr. Mulemwa said. He attributed the reduction to government policies that encouraged maize production.
“This bumper harvest is a result of the Republican President’s calls on citizens to grow more maize for household food security, the timely distribution of farming inputs to farmers, and the good rainfall pattern in the last farming season,” he explained.
Mr. Mulemwa said the reduced prices had helped ordinary Zambians access affordable food without having to queue for long hours at selected outlets.
“It is gratifying to note that the reduction enables many ordinary people to afford a bag of mealie meal, unlike before when they were spending hours in long queues in the hope of buying cheaper mealie meal, particularly at ZNS outlets,” he said.
He also took a swipe at the President’s critics, accusing them of wishing for higher prices.
“Interestingly, President Hichilema’s usual armchair critics and prophets of doom, who prayed that the price skyrockets to over K500 per 25kg bag, are now dead silent as they too are enjoying Bally’s cheap mealie meal,” Mr. Mulemwa said.
