NWIDEF president Gilly Kakunta said he is concerned that North-western Province is lagging behind in the agriculture sector.
Mr Kakunta said there is need for the government to urgently invest in the development of the farm block to attract farmers to settle and start cultivating various crops at a larger scale.
“As a province we need a lot to be done in the area of agriculture such as opening of the farming block by taking basic services such as electricity and water to attract commercial farmers.
He said this will be a starting point to attract farmers to settle there.
Mr Kakunta said the region has fertile soil and good rainfall patterns to support farming, hence the need for the government to invest in the farm block.
As of May this year, government was conducting a land audit in Mushindamo District to earmark the land and establish how many farmers would occupy the area.
Meanwhile, Mr Kakunta has urged government to conduct oil and gas exploration in the province in the wake of increasing prices of fuel as Kabompo and Chavuma Districts have oil deposits that need exploration for further value addition and purification. – ZANAIS
