GOVERNMENT should consider adjusting the national school calendar for learning to suit the cycle of Covid-19 cases in a manner that would not disturb the school curriculum, Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) has suggested.
General Secretary, Newman Bubala said the government should consider adjusting the school calendar to avoid disturbing the curriculum through prolonged holiday due to increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Mr. Bubala said in an interview that prolonged holidays have greatly affected the school curriculum as it creates a backlog of learning and adjustments which sometimes puts pressure on the teachers and the learners.
He said standard officers in the Ministry of Education should conduct a thorough research to see how best the curriculum could be re-visited so that schools remain closed during the time that the number of COVID19 cases are on the increase.
‘’What we are proposing is that in the cold season schools can be closed and open in the hot season when cases are down so that we reduce on cases, education experts can see how best this can be handled with a view of saving lives and making a leaner learn in a good environment,’’ he said.
Mr. Bubala explained that the teaching fraternity faces the challenge of backlog of learning every time there is a prolonged holiday due to escalating cases of Covid-19 hence the proposal to review the school calendar.
He said the prolonged holidays disturb the learning period stipulated under the curriculum and the learners.
