Kalumbila District Farmers Association says it is happy that farmers who supplied maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will be paid next week.
Last week Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo announced that government has secured funds to pay off farmers who supplied their maize to the agency in the last crop marketing season.
Association chairperson Hachipabenda Nsabula said in an interview that though it is late, it will help the farmers to meet some of the costs.
“The farmers needed to be paid like yesterday, so it is good news to us,” said Mr Nsabula.
He said his association has been calling on government to pay the farmers on time.
He appealed to the farmers to put to good use the money by planning for the next farming season or venture into other income generating activities.
And Mr Nsabula said his association is hoping that in the next farming season government will do better.
He said he understands that the new dawn government is just settling in hence the hiccups.
“But come next year if the situation repeats itself, we will have a cause to stand on the ant-hill and make noise,” he said.
