WE must ensure the government fulfills its various promises regarding improving the welfare of the blind and differently abled most of whom are begging in the streets of Kitwe, Chairperson of the Kitwe District Association of Persons with Disabilities (KIDAPED), Gilbert Mumba, has said
Mr Mumba said the blind and persons with disabilities must reorganise themselves and ensure that they benefit from various programmes which the ‘New Dawn’ government of President Hakainde Hichilema was putting in place to improve the welfare of people.
Mr Mumba was speaking yesterday when Kitwe District Commissioner Lawrence Mwanza and Mayor Mpasa Mwaya and Luanshya Mayor Charles Mulenga addressed more than 50 blind and other persons with disabilities at the Kitwe council offices on the to improve their welfare.
It was discovered that most of the blind people in the streets of Kitwe were from Luanshya and Ndola and plans were underway to take them back to their respective districts.
Mr Mumba said he was impressed that the government had allocated money to help the persons with disabilities.
Mr Mumba said it was iAnd speaking earlier, Kitwe DC Lawrence Mwanza said government had a well thought out programme to improve the welfare of the differently abled through agriculture, taking their children to school and others.
Mr Mwanza said there was need for the blind and other persons with disabilities to cooperate with the government on its various programmes.
