ALL contracts for garbage collection in the Central Business District will soon be terminated for failure to deliver services as expected, Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala has said.
Ms Chitangala said new and serious contractors for waste collection would be engaged.
She said despite contractors being paid their dues three weeks ago, the city had continued being dirty.
Ms Chitangala said several meetings had been held with the contractors, but they do not want to comply with the contract terms.
She said in an interview that the council was expected to have a meeting with the engineering department next week over the same matter.
“We are worried because this is the rainy season and we have to curb diseases,” she said.
Ms Chitangala said the minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Garry Nkombo was aware of the challenges the council had been facing with the contractors.
She however urged the public to ensure that they dump garbage in designated places to avoid contraction of water-borne diseases.
”The contractors were paid three weeks ago, but what they should say is that, they do not have capacity and they are now running away because they don’t have capacity to take care of the garbage in the city.
“However we have resolved that since they are not performing then their contracts have to be cancelled so that we advertise to get people who have capacity to do the work,” said Ms Chitangala.
