GOVERNMENT must start strategising on how it will invest in research following the discovery of a new coronavirus variant known as Omicron, says the Resident Doctors Association (RDA).
The B.1.1.529 variant was first spotted in Botswana among fully vaccinated persons, where three cases have now been sequenced, six more have been confirmed in South Africa, and one in Hong Kong in a travellerreturning from South Africa.
RDA president Brian Sampa says Zambia has for a long time depended on other countries for sponsorship of research.
Dr Sampa says the coronavirus has been mutating giving scientists many lessons and opportunities to research on how people can be protected.
And Dr Sampa has encouraged people who are fully vaccinated to take keen interest in following Covid-19 health protocols as they are still at risk of getting infected.
