THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has warned against political violence as campaigns begin today.
It also warned of stern sanctions against political parties that will breach the electoral code of conduct.
ECZ chairperson, Justice Esau Chulu said the commission was committed to ensuring a transparent, free and fair election.
Justice Chulu said during the launch of the campaign season yesterday that ECZ would ensure that all political parties participating in the August 12, 2021 election were given a fair playing field free of violence.
He said in a nationwide address that the ECZ would work with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that the campaign period, the poll day and post-election were violence free.
Justice Chulu also warned political parties against breaching the electoral code of conduct.
He said the ECZ would not hesitate to take action against parties that would breach the electoral code of conduct.
“The electoral code of conduct outlines guidelines how political parties are supposed to conduct themselves,” said Justice Chulu.
He urged political parties to familiarise themselves with the electoral code of conduct.
