THE Zambia police is committed to flushing out abusers of social media by some sections of society, says Inspector General Kakoma Kanganja.
Mr Kanganja said the service was working in collaboration with the Zambia Information Communication and Technology Authority (ZICTA) and other stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem.
He was speaking at 2017 Zambia Police annual ball in Lusaka on Friday at ZNS Chamba Valley mess where Home Affairs Minister Mr Stephen Kampyongo said the Police should begin to pay serious attention to the scourge.
Mr Kampyongo said some disgruntled elements and irresponsible arm chair critics were maligning the leadership of the country and misinforming the citizens through the social media with the sole aim of turning the citizens against their government.
Mr Kampyongo said President Edgar Lungu had continuously called for unity of purpose amongst the defence and security institutions.
He said the Head of State wanted to see unity of purpose to enable security wings being involved in productive economic activities such as agriculture and industrialization to contribute to the growth of the national economy.
Mr Kampyongo however said that he was satisfied with the unity of purpose demonstrated by the defence and security forces in stopping the indiscriminate cutting and smuggling of the mukula trees.
Mr Kampyongo said the unity of purpose, discipline and patriotism made it possible to contain the crime and hard work has to continue on this front to eliminate economic crimes.
He expected the Zambia Police to continue giving special attention to modernising operations as the country’s economy leapt towards in assuming middle income status.
He was pleased with improved performance of the Zambia Police Service in 2017 because it recorded a reduction in the prevalence of crime in the country.
“I have observed improvements in terms of discipline and performance but would like to see unity of purpose among the defence and security institutions,” said Mr Kampyongo
He said 74,573 crimes were reported from the ten provinces in 2017 as compared to 87,432 cases recorded in 2016.
He has since commended the police for the continues focus on keeping the country safe from crime and disorder even in the midst of persistent and often unjustified criticism.
