THE North Western Development Council of Elders has urged Government to increase funding to the education, agriculture and health sectors in the 2018 national budget.
Council chairperson Lucas Chikoti told the Daily Nation in an interview that the education, agriculture and health sectors were key in the development of the nation.
Mr Chikoti said that no economy could grow if the three sectors were not well taken care of.
“The three sectors are key to the development of the country, so we expect that these sectors will get the highest funding,” said Mr Chikoti.
He also said it was also important to invest in the energy sector by constructing more hydro power stations to lower the electricity tariffs.
Mr Chikoti said that North Western Province has a lot of waterfalls which government could take advantage of and develop.
“For example, we have the Chikata waterfalls in Kabompo and the Chavuma rapids. If all these are developed, there will be increased power supply which will result in lowered tariffs,” he said.
Mr Chikoti also said there was need to allocate funds towards the completion of the Kasanjiku hydro power station in Mwinilunga. He said once completed, the station will not only provide power but also create employment for the local people.
