THE re-introduction of corporal punishment in both public and private schools will assist in maintaining discipline among pupils, National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has said.
NAQEZ executive director Aaron Chansa said that the abolishment of corporal punishment in 2004 had led to mass indiscipline in both public and private schools.
He said that indiscipline among pupils was greatly affecting teaching and learning in Zambia.
“Indiscipline is affecting the learning and teaching process, today teachers are finding it very difficult to meaningfully discharge their duties because there is too much indiscipline among learners,” Mr Chansa said.
He said that the Holy Bible in Proverbs 23 vs. 13 commands that Christians should not spare the rod if they are to save children from social destruction.
Mr Chansa said the Bible teaches that all children were naturally silly and a good spanking would teach them good behaviour.
He challenged the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs to guide the nation on important religious and social matters.
“Since we are a Christian nation, we should heed what the Bible says, but we would like to hear the position of Government on this critical matter,” Mr Chansa said.
