A 46-YEAR-OLDman of Solwezi has died after the wall of a mine fell on him as he was digging for emerald, North Western Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka has confirmed.
Mr Daka said the incident occurred yesterday around 13:00 in Ndumbwa area of Solwezi and identified the man as Mr Paul Mung’omba.
He said that Mr Mung’omba was illegally mining in an old pit of approximately 12 metres deep when the rubble fell on him.
“Yes, we received a report of sudden death were one man died after the rubble fell on him while illegally mining emerald in an old pit,” he said.
He said Mr Mung’omba died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries.
“Police visited the scene and found the body had already been retrieved by relatives,” he said.
He said the body has since been deposited in Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
