ZAMBIANS should step up the effort in raising awareness and funds for the orphans and vulnerable children in society, says Information Minister Kampamba Mulenga.
Speaking after flagging off the “Walk with Us Campaign ” started by Tom David and Warren Handley of South Africa in Kitwe at Nofred House Ms Mulenga said children are the weakest members of society hence they need to be protected, natured and provided for.
Ms Mulenga called on the residents of Kitwe to emulate the gesture by donating to the local vulnerable children as Tom and Warren have devoted themselves to walk over 6000 Kilometers in support of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC).
She appealed to Zambians to reach out to the OVC and more so the girl OVC by building bridges and not walls and ensure that they never walk alone.
“The great act that we have been privileged to witness today where Tom and Warren have devoted themselves to walk over 6000 kilometres from mount Kilimanjaro to Johannesburg in support of orphans and vulnerable children shows us that even today there are people who will build bridges instead of walls” she said.
And Warren Handley said the Walk With Us is partnered with the Aluwani which focuses on caring for ophan and vulnerable children in the rural community which exposed them to the problems that are faced by children especially the girl child.
Mr Handley said through the work that is being done by Aluwani many children are able to go back to school and the aim of the Walk With Us is to ensure that no child walks through life alone.
He said the journey started with climbing mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and they will walk back to Johannesburg.
Mr Handley said the walk is in six countries Tanzania , Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe , Botswana and lastly South Africa and it’s expected to go up to 25 September.
