A POLITICAL commentator has urged the youth in Zambia to remain patriotic and safeguard peace and democracy in the country.
In an interview yesterday, Edwin Nyirongo said Zambia’s peace and stability depended on the young people because they were the majority.
Mr Nyirongo, who is executive director of Alliance for Luapula Young Entrepreneurs (ALYE), said peace was an expensive commodity and that it should be defended at all cost.
“Zambia is currently experiencing unprecedented political happenings. It’s during this period when some politicians are trying to use the youth to fight their personal battles aimed at advancing their selfish motives.
“So, there has never been the right time than now when we the youth of this country must come together as one and defend the peace, freedom and democracy that our forefathers fought for,’’ he said.
Mr Nyirongo however bemoaned cases of arson and vandalism that had been recorded in some parts of the country.
“It will be very unfortunate and disappointing if the reports we are getting are true that such cases of arson and vandalism we have been witnessing are being championed by the youth from a named political party.”
Mr Nyirongo appealed to Government to step up efforts in addressing economic problems facing the youth.
“We can only stop the youths from being abused if we collectively address the problems troubling them,” said Mr Nyirongo.
