appeals for support as Zambia faces mighty Germany on Wednesday
By Michael Miyoba
UNDER-20 striker Fashion Sakala says the loss to Costa Rica will not demoralize the team because Zambia is focused on achieving its targets at the Under-20 South Korea World Cup.
He called on Zambians to believe in the team and support them to the hilt as they take on mighty Germany in the round of 16 on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking in an interview after the Zambia vs Costa Rica match played at Cheonan Sports Complex, Sakala said the Junior Chipolopolo were still united despite having recorded their first loss at the on-going tournament after going down 1-0 to Group C opponents Costa Rica who have since been eliminated.
A 14th minute goal by Jostin Daly from the spot was all Costa Rica needed to collect their first win at the tournament.
However, Sakala believes the loss has strengthened the team spirit in camp as the Junior Chipolopolo prepare to take on Germany in Wednesday’s knock-out clash.
“The game was just okay. It was the easiest game compared to all the games we played despite having recorded a loss.
“I believe it is not a game that can frustrate us or bring confusion in camp. We remain focused as a team. People expect a lot from me and my colleagues and we will try our best to help the team achieve its goals,” Sakala said.
Sakala admitted that the team needed to improve on their defensive tactics, noting that they were fond of allowing goals in the early stages of each game.
“We have a bad habit of allowing goals in the early minutes of the game, which is not good for the team.
“Zambians should however believe in us as a team. We can do it. Nothing is impossible with God. There is love and trust and unity in the team and we believe we can do it as a team,” Sakala said.
Despite having lost to Costa Rica, the Junior Chipolopolo qualified as Group C leaders with six points and will meet Germany in the round of 16 to be played on Wednesday at 13:00 hours Zambian time.
