FRED M’membe should come back from hiding and face the law if he is truly innocent of the charges against him, the Bishops Council of Zambia (BCZ) has demanded.
And BCZ spokesperson Fred Chingole has charged that people should deist from attributing the closure of the Post newspaper to President Edgar Lungu because it was just the law taking its course.
Mr Chingole said that Mr M’membe was not above the law and that it was only fair for him to face its wrath if found wanting. He wondered why Mr M’membe had run away from the country if he was innocent of the charges against him.
Mr. Chingole challenged Mr M’membe to come back and face the law if he was truly innocent of the charges against him.
“If Mr M’membe is truly innocent, let him come back and face the law. No one is above the law, if it was proven that he committed an offence under the Zambia Revenue Authority, then action should be taken. “But people should not say that it’s President Lungu using ZRA or the courts to persecute Mr M’membe. It’s the revenue authority asking for what belongs to them, people should allow the law to take its course. We can’t allow people to go scot free after abrogating the Constitution,” he said.
And Mr Chingole said that Mr M’membe had not been denied the right to exculpate himself, hence there was no reason for him to run away if innocent.
He advised people who have been demanding for the Post newspaper to start operating to let the law take its course.
Mr Chingole reiterated that illegality would not be allowed in Zambia because no one who was above the law.
