MONARCH football club of Lusaka’s Chelstone township on Sunday scooped the inaugural Obbie Chomba Unity cup tournament after walloping Helen Kaunda 3-1in the final played at Kalingalinga primary school ground.
Monarch’s dominance from the first whistle paid off in the 48th minute via a Charles Zulu strike. After 17 minutes Helen Kaunda levelled matters through Charles Mwale’s long range free kick. Monarch then put the game beyond Helen Kaunda’s reach with goals from in-form striker Alick Lungu (75) and Mathews Mwale (90).
Speaking at the awards presentation, tournament sponsor and Munali constituency aspiring independent candidate Obbie Chomba said he wants development to the grassroot level and assured the constituents that if they give him the mandate, he will work with everyone regardless of their political affiliation.
“We shall ensure that we work together as one regardless of the background where you are coming from. We are one people and what we need is to continue uniting and bringing development to Munali constituency,” Chomba said.
He said going forward Sunday’s needs an upgrade to international standards. He hoped that if people send him to Parliament in the August 2026 polls he will use his partners to develop the ground. He called for more young people to take part in sports activities as one way of curbing crime in the communities of Munali constituency.
“Through these activities we are going to be able to network and create opportunities for each other. It’s not just a matter of playing, we are getting to know each other, the skills, the teams, the talents; and after that it is how we are going to empower each other.
“This is not the last time we are hosting the Obbie Chomba Unity cup. This will be a tradition in Munali constituency and we hope that we will have sponsors that will come on board to ensure they support development of talent in our communities.”
