THE Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tateyam Jotaro, has expressed confidence in the ongoing Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), describing it as a pivotal moment for sustainable development across the African continent.
Mr. Jotaro said that TICAD9 presented a unique opportunity for African nations to benefit from international cooperation and to pursue lasting solutions to some of the region’s most pressing challenges. Zambia is being represented by Vice President Mutale Nalumango.
Mr. Jotaro described the summit as a “game-changer” and emphasised that all African countries stand to gain valuable insights and support from the conference.
Mr. Jotaro also highlighted that TICAD9 reflected the strong and long-standing relationship between Japan and Africa.
He said the conference continues to serve as a symbol of Japan’s commitment to working alongside African nations, particularly in areas where co-creation and innovation are necessary to address complex issues.
Mr. Jotaro, said TICAD9 will focus on enhancing food security through improved agricultural productivity, boosting investment in high-quality infrastructure, and promoting economic growth grounded in sustainability and inclusivity. He explained that the summit sought to ensure development initiatives were not only economically viable but also socially inclusive and environmentally sound.
In referencing countries such as Zambia, Mr. Jotaro said infrastructure development must be pursued in a way that avoids excessive debt and focuses on long-term, transformative outcomes rather than isolated, short-term projects. He said JICA remained dedicated to supporting Zambia in key sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, peacebuilding, infrastructure, and private sector development.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, praised JICA for its continued support and underscored the importance of Zambia’s partnership with Japan.
