BASIC Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) has commended the government on the approval of Teaching Professions Bill of 2025, owing to its significant role in responding to the challenges in the education system.
In an interview with ZANIS, BETUZ Director-Public and International Relations, Obby Chisala says the bill will play a significant role in improving the quality of education through refreshing the minds of the teaching professionals.
“Allowing them to go through the examination, will give time to the aspiring teachers to go back to what they had learnt at college and perform competently,” said Mr Chisala.
Mr Chisala urged the Teaching Council of Zambia to use the process of examination for professional development, as opposed to fundraising from unemployed teachers with a low economic capacity.
“We wouldn’t want to see exorbitant fees attached to these examinations, these are who have been waiting to be employed,” emphasised Mr Chisala. He added that the policy is not segregative, in that it also encompasses the in-service teachers, who are expected to undergo intensive continuous professional development, in order for them to competently apply the new revised education curriculum.
Cabinet approved the Teaching Professions Bill of 2025, which will require all newly trained teachers to pass a licensure examination before being entrusted with teaching.
