ZAMBIA has invited the European Union (EU) to be part of the many election monitors to come and observe the country’s 2026 general election.
The country will next year hold its general election, which comprise of presidential, parliamentary and local government.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe presented the invitation to the EU during a bilateral meeting with the President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, on the sidelines of the African Union-European Union Ministerial meeting being held in Brussels, Belgium.
This is according to a statement issued yesterday by Hambaya Mung’andu, the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambian Embassy to Belgium. The meeting focused on strengthening Zambia-EU relations, particularly in democratic governance, electoral transparency and institutional cooperation. During the engagement, Mr Haimbe expressed Zambia’s appreciation for the EU’s role in observing the 2021 general elections and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding democratic values.
“There have been recent legal reforms, including the repeal of the law on the Defamation of the President, as part of Zambia’s broader efforts to promote media freedom and safeguard civil liberties,” Mr Haimbe said.
In response, Mr. McAllister, commended Zambia’s democratic progress and peaceful political environment.
He reaffirmed the EU’s readiness to continue supporting Zambia and other like-minded nations committed to democratic principles and good governance.
The meeting underscored the mutual interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in the promotion of democratic institutions and electoral integrity.
