A LUMEZI Man is in a critical condition, after being bitten by a Hyena in Lumezi District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Roberson Mweemba confirmed the development and identified the man as Gladwell Banda aged 26.
Mr Mweemba said the incident happened on May 17, 2025, at around 03:00 hours near Chizindile Village in Lumezi and reported at around 07:00hrs at Lumezi Police Post.
“Mr Banda and his friend Derrick Muhoni aged 25 of Chimongo Village, Chief Zumwanda, had gone to Sikatengwa area where they had a piece work. After finishing their work late, Derrick Muhoni advised his friend Mr Banda that they sleep and go home the following day, the Report further indicates that Mr Banda refused saying he had money for transport hence he will get into a vehicle going to Chitala and that from Chitala he will walk home.
Having said that, he left to go and look for a vehicle going to Chitala of which he managed to find one,” he said.
Meanwhile, further information indicate that Mr Banda was in a drunken state and that when Mr Banda dropped at Chitala, he also had a piece of meat on his hand at around 02:00 hours and started off going home on foot.
As he was a few meters away from home, he was attacked by a hyena and was only rescued by a brother who heard him crying for help.
“Unfortunately, he had already sustained an open wound on the right side of the stomach with protruding intestines while his toes on the right foot were also eaten off,” Mr Mweemba said.
Mr Mweemba said Mr Banda was then quickly picked and rushed to Lumezi District Hospital, adding that officers visited the victim in the hospital who was found in an unconscious state with the reported injuries.
He said the victim is currently in unstable condition being attended to by medical personnel.
The Victim has been referred to Chipata General Hospital for further treatment.
