NICKSON Chilangwa may not be able to attend the funeral and burial of his late wife Mwamba Kambikambi because government as well as the Zambia Correctional Serice (ZCS) by yesterday could not confirm whether he would be released to pay his last respect to his wife.
Mwamba Kambikambi, who died on Sunday is expected to be buried today.
Chilangwa has been jailed for the offence of malicious damage of public property in a matter witnesses told the court he was never at the scene of the crime and his he has been denied bond pending appeal to the higher court.
He also served as Luapula Province Minister.
Government has stated that it is not up to them but the Zambia Correctional Service to determine whether the jailed former lawmaker could attend his wife’s funeral to pay his last respects.
According to a programme seen by the Daily Nation, the funeral of Mrs Chilangwa who died in Ndola would be held in Chilanga District.
The Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Fredrick Chilukutu when contacted sent a text indicating that he was in a meeting and asked that query be sent to him but did not respond by press time.
Dickson Matembo, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said he was outside the country and so could not competently comment on the matter.
“I am outside the country. I am not preview to what is obtaining on the ground. But what has been the history of such matters?” Mr Matembo asked.
