Dear Editor,
IT is more than true today that a good number of Zambians have resorted to eating fritters (Vitumbuwa) because they cannot afford expensive mealie-meal for their daily nshima.
I have noticed too that the majority of our office workers depend on fritters for their breakfast and lunch. You will agree with me that Vitumbuwa is a common sight almost everywhere these days in our towns and cities.
Nearly all bus stops have been invaded by women making fritters who I must admit are in brisk business. The prices of fritters now range from anywhere between K2-K6 each and people are rushing for this not particularly healthy food because they have no choice.
Life in Zambia has indeed continued to get worse for ordinary Zambians and shockingly our UPND government cannot be bothered. For now, all that matters to UPND is constitutional amendments to ensure it secures a second and final term of office next year. Our hunger fire may cost UPND government next year if it continues to ignore the cries of the people.
I fully remember our founding President Kenneth Kaunda (MHSCTRIP) was taught a bitter lesson when Zambians decided they had had enough of mealie-meal situation and took to the streets to protest over their situation.
The police and the army failed to stop the unarmed Zambians who later earned free government mealie-meal coupons. Indeed, some Zambians sadly, were shot to death during the protests. The majority survived to enjoy free mealie-meal from the UNIP government and the matter was thus resolved.
