THE consortium of the opposition political parties that is threatening civil disobedience are but a desperate assembly of individuals who have realised that they have already lost the 2026 general election and are trying to use protests and civil unrest as a scapegoat for their defeat, Cornelius Mweetwa has said.
Mr Mweetwa, the UPND spokesperson says the call by the opposition for civil disobedience over the constitutional amendments has exposed their inability to marshal support from Zambians and form a credible and strong opposition.
Mr Mweetwa said there shall be only one President at one particular time and that God had chosen President Hakainde Hichilema to preside over the affairs of the country, including guiding the country out of the drought disaster and other economic ills.
Mr Mweetwa, who doubles as Chief Government Spokesperson and Information and Media Minister said in an interview yesterday that even when the opposition dared to stage a demonstration, it would not succeed because according to him, they did not have numbers or leadership.
“As long as the opposition is anchored or founded around the former ruling party (the Patriotic Front), such an opposition is destined to fail. We need a strong opposition and not one that is tainted by the PF. You cannot have a corruption-tainted political party orchestrating and championing a united opposition. These are just criminals and should not be allowed to lead from the front,” Mr Mweetwa said.
He said the opposition political parties who were opposed to UPND were nothing but political comedians who, according to him were merely entertaining Zambians by putting up what he termed political road shows.
Mr Mweetwa said the opposition had failed to garner enough support and so had resorted to illegal ways of doing politics, stating that God had appointed President Hichilema to lead Zambians out of the country’s social and economic challenges.
“Even as they call for civil disobedience, I strongly doubt it will take off because they have no numbers. They would only be enjoying the democratic rights and freedoms President Hichilema has provided. As Government, we shall not stifle citizens’ rights as long as they conduct their so-called protests within the confines of the law. No one will stop them,” Mr Mweetwa said.
