Laura Miti has described as abuse of the Judiciary by the UPND in its attempt re-open former President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility case for which the Constitutional Court had conclusively determined and pronounced itself.

Ms Miti says she is concerned that the UPND government is abusing the judicial process by using its proxies to bring back cases to the courts which she said are likely to advance the causes of the ruling party.
Ms Miti said although Zambians should admit that the use of proxies to advance political agendas was started by former President Lungu, the UPND had certainly hyped the trend by adopting the adage of; ‘What is good for the gander.”
She said in her Facebook posting that it was time the UPND had allowed the Judiciary to regain some respect and credibility, stating that the governing party was wrong to have decided to begin repeating the wrongs and excesses of the Patriotic Front (PF) while in government.
“Well, it seems the UPND have taken the – what’s good for gander – adage too much to heart. They are wrong! Repeating PF excesses cannot be excused. It is not PF that suffers. It is Zambia and her institutions of democracy. It is time the judiciary was allowed to regain some respect and credibility,” Ms Miti said.
Ms Miti stated that she was about the erosion of democratic principles under President Hakainde Hichilema, stating that the Hichilema administration was pushing boundaries and getting away with it.
“What I worry about, are democratic principles. The HH government is pushing boundaries and getting away with it. The abuse of the Public Order Act is rife. Even more concerning for me is the abuse of judicial processes, where proxies bring cases to court that are likely to advance the ruling party’s political causes. An example is the attempt to re-open EL’s eligibility case. Now, we have to start by admitting that it was EL, himself, or his reign that started this very dangerous trend using this very case,” Ms Miti said.
She stated that Dan Pule and others were fronts for the PF when they got the courts to pronounce that former President Lungu was eligible to contest the 2021 general elections, stating; “I, by the way, believe the man was eligible, but that is not the point. It is, rather, how friends of the PF, out-of-no-where, took a case to court that was not their personal concern.”
Ms Miti however said the cost of living was painfully high but she was convinced the UPND government was doing all it could that could be done.
“The cost of living is painfully high, but I am convinced this government is doing all that can be done. In other words, I don’t think prices would be cheaper with any other government. At least, I have not heard anything that does not sound populist, as a remedy,” Ms Miti said.
