Speaking at the inaugural digital government Africa summit yesterday in Chongwe, Mr Hichilema says African countries need digital transformation to grow their economies.
He said once there was digital transformation, business and job opportunities would be created.
Mr Hichilema said African governments could only provide for the vulnerable population if their economies were strong.
He said if African countries wanted to grow their economies faster, efficiently and effectively, they needed to put their resource envelope in improving the digital sub-sector.
Mr Hichilema said if the African countries did not invest in digitisation, they risked being left behind and that it would be difficult to interact with countries that are advanced in technology.
President Hichilema said the myth that political leaders did not appreciate digitalisation was false because they realised the importance of digital transformation.
Mr Hichilema also argued that digitalisation could not lead to job losses, stating that if technological advancement delivered, there would be more jobs created in other sectors of the economy.
