Speaking when he featured on Millennium TV programme dubbed “The Platform” on Sunday, Mr Chifire said government should have found means of subsidising the commodity.
He said currently, Zambians are grappling with the high cost of living amidst low salaries.
Mr Chifire said government should have over taxed commodities like beer, cigerette among others to channel the resources to subsidise fuel.
Mr Chifire said fuel is the main driver of the economy, the high price of fuel had an impact on the country’s wellbeing.
“We needed subsidies on fuel, government should have taken a bit of time to remove the subsidy.
As it stands now the K30 fuel is beyond the reach of many Zambians. It is easy to say we are taking resources to important sectors like education but the livelihood of people is equally important,” he said.
He said government need to have pro-poor policies as this would help to cushion the challenges the people of Zambia were facing.
