THERE is need for the country to broaden its tax base, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner General Dingani Banda says.

Mr. Banda says for a long time now the country has been surviving on a narrow tax base, a matter he says should be revisited.
He has called on the country to migrate from solely depending on the mining sector, saying the sector sometimes suffers low production levels and changes in prices on the international market, that in turn affect the country’s tax base.
Mr. Banda said the ZRA has not been collecting enough taxes because of the dependency on the mining sector.
He reaffirmed its commitment to help improve the country’s tax base and contribute to economic development.
“This situation needs to be changed for the country to start collecting meaningful tax unlike what is happening.
“Currently we only depend on the mining sector, which should not be the case. Tax needs to be collected in various sectors of the economy and we will see significant change in our economy,” he said.
