In a speech read by CTPD programmes Coordinator Natalie Kaunda during the people’s budget town hall meeting yesterday, CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo said, low tax has resulted in increasing inflow of tobacco in the country.
Mr Mwaipopo said employing high tax will reduce inflow of the commodity in the country, thereby lowering the uptake among Zambians.
He said if the situation does not change, many lives will be lost because it has been proven that tobacco is harmful.
Mr Mwaipopo said strengthening tobacco control policies is key in protecting the health of the people.
Mr Mwaipopo said, through the ongoing Peoples budget meeting, participants are expected to incorporate the issue of tobacco control in their submissions.
