MIGHTY” Mufulira Wanderers announced their return to the MTN/FAZ Super League with a bang by slaughtering Green Buffalos 1-0 in a Week-1 fixture played yesterday at a fully packed Shinde Stadium in Mufulira.
A second half goal from Maxwell Mabenga was all the nine-tmes Zambian champions needed to walk away with maximum points in the intriguing match which was tightly contested.
After a goalless first half, Mabenga stunned Buffaloes with a goal in the 77th minute to send the home fans who had filled Shinde Stadium to capacity into a frenzy.
Due to the high intensity of the match, both teams finished the game with 10 players after John Kosamu from Buffalos and Wanderers’ defender Bwembya Kakungu were sent off for their clumsy fouls in the second half.
Meanwhile, Carling Black Label Samuel “Zoom” Ndhlovu Charity Shield winners, Forest Rangers began the new Super League season with an exciting win over Kabwe Warriors.
Rangers stunned Warriors 1-0 thanks to Lazarous Chishimba’s cracker in the 70th minute.
Forest had dictated play from the first half and were unfortunate when Moyela Libaba thought he had grabbed the opener two minutes before the break.
However, the goal was disallowed due to a foul which was committed before the goal.
It took the Ndola side just 25 minutes of the second half to break the deadlock and score what proved to be the match winner.
After the impressive win over Warriors, Forest join Zesco United, Red Arrows, and Mufulira Wanderers who all started the new soccer season with 1-0 victories.
